O Lord, our Sovereign,
When I look at your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars
that you have established;
what are human beings
that you are mindful of them?

The words of the Book of Psalms are ancient text, written many centuries ago, but when we read and explore them today within the context of nature and creation, those same words can resonate with us, inspire us, and bring us the joy, peace, and solace we seek to lift our soul and spirit, particularly in challenging times.

In this stunning and inspirational volume, author Robin T. Jennings and photographer William A. Blodgett Jr. invite us to Look at the Birds of the Air, as the Book of Matthew 6:26 challenges us to do, to find the happiness, serenity, and comfort we seek. By observing birds and animals and the miracle of nature, we can learn valuable life lessons and discover and appreciate the meaningful role we humans play in creation, as well.

Reading the thought-provoking, inspirational psalms contained in this book alongside Blodgett’s breathtaking photographs of some of nature’s most beautiful and intriguing birds and animals is guaranteed to lift our soul and spirit and to bring into focus what is right and wonderful in the world and how God’s grace and His creation bless us in each new day.

About the Photographer

As an adjunct to a life-long love of hunting, fishing and enjoying nature, ultimately across all seven continents, photographer William A. Praise for Look at the Birds of the Air

Look at the Birds of the Air is a beautifully crafted tribute to God’s creation, inviting readers to rediscover the natural world through the lens of faith and wonder. For me, birding becomes more than a hobby—it’s a pathway to healing, a way to find peace and solace in the rhythms of nature.

“Jennings weaves thoughtful reflections grounded in scripture, gently reminding us of the deep spiritual connection we can cultivate with the world around us. These meditations are both grounding and uplifting, encouraging a soulful appreciation of even the smallest creatures.

“Complementing the text, Blodgett’s stunning photography captures the majesty of birds in both familiar backyards and far-off landscapes. Each image evokes a sense of awe, underscoring the vastness and glory of creation.

“This book is a quiet invitation to slow down, look up, and be reminded of the divine presence in the everyday.”

“Much more than just another adornment for the coffee table! Bill Blodgett has put together a wonderful set of nature (mostly birds) photography. From the white eye-ring of the Anhinga to the mid-air mortal combat of a pair of Snowy Egrets, Bill shows us things even experienced birders may have never seen before.

“But this volume is not just about birds. Drawing upon his friendship of many years with Episcopal priest Robin Jennings, the book incorporates musings on the natural world with ancient wisdom from the Psalms to guide us in finding our own place in Creation. Highly recommended!”

“I’ve been fortunate to communicate, interpret, and educate about bird biology and migration during a memorable 36-year career in five national parks. The theme of beauty, birds, and the renewal of life is experienced within this book, Look at the Birds of the Air, as if the reader is walking through one of our National Parks.”

“This collection of vivid photographs is pure poetry in stopped motion. Accompanied by thoughtful reflections on the winged wonders of this world, it’s a celebration of sacred beauty that too often goes unnoticed.”

Look at the Birds of the Air vividly integrates a pastor’s love of the Psalms with a photographer’s love of birds and wildlife. As you ponder these colorful connections of word and image, I’m confident that the result will inspire your soul and make you more attentive to an astoundingly creative God.”

“This book of nature’s marvels highlights the awe, inspiration, and joy that we can find in the avian world. So too, our biblical teachings provide an unending source of questions for those who are certain and certainties for those who grapple with questions. Coupled together, the photos and textual insights provide a holistic reminder of the Divine presence from shore to sky.”
